Record Team Turnout at the Jamaica Moves 5K

The 5K has become the anchor event of the Jamaica Moves calendar, and this year the shape of the field changed. Workplace teams, not individual runners, accounted for most entries — a shift that says more about the eight weeks beforehand than about race day itself.

The training mattered more than the race

Participating organisations ran lunchtime walking groups in the run-up. Colleagues who would never have entered alone signed up together, trained together at whatever pace the slowest member set, and finished together. Several teams crossed the line holding hands, which tells you what the morning was actually about.

That pattern is consistent with what the evidence says about sustained physical activity: the strongest predictor of whether someone keeps moving is not motivation or information, but whether the people around them are moving too. A colleague who expects you at the front door at half past twelve is worth more than any campaign.

Designed to be finishable

Entry remained free for participants aged 60 and over. The walking category started with the runners rather than after them — a small change participants had asked for, and one that removed the sense of being an afterthought. The course was flat, shaded for most of its length, and marshalled so that nobody was ever out of sight of a volunteer.

Water stations were placed closer together than a competitive race would require, and the finish line stayed staffed until the last participant came through. A 5K that closes down around the slowest walker is not a 5K for beginners.

Beyond the medal

Teams are being encouraged to keep their walking groups going now the event has passed, and the Unit is providing a simple framework for workplaces that want to continue: a suggested schedule, a route-planning guide, and a contact for organisations that want help getting started.

The 5K is the visible part. The habit it is meant to seed is the walk that happens on an ordinary Tuesday, when nobody is watching and there is no medal at the end.
